Update 3/31

Hello Everyone,

I figured it’s about time I check in and see how everyone is doing. I know this has been an incredibly tough time all around, and I hope you all are making it through alright, ( or as best as can be expected when the rug has been pulled out from under us).

I am assuming you’ve seen the PPS emails as well as Mrs. Kosmala’s updates, explaining that we will indeed be proceeding with an online version of class starting next week.

Of course this will look incredibly different then the school day that we are used to, but we are excited to be able to get back to it, and provide even the smallest bit of normalcy for the kids. The district does plan on providing us teachers with curriculum that they would like us to use, but I also plan on finishing up a few things we started as a class as well as continuing on with some of the assignments that are unique to my class.

As of now we are still working on how that will look for each of us individual teachers and will be sure to keep you updated. For me I will being doing the majority of my communication through google classroom, so students will want to be checking in there a few times a week to be sure they are up-to-date. In fact, I have just posted a message for them and their first online assignment, so I encourage them to head over there and check it out!

I recognize that this is certainly NOT ideal, I wish I could do more to help and support, and that we could all be back together in the classroom, however, for that we will have to wait. So for now, please do not hesitate to contact me with questions, comments or concerns, and will help as best I can. I also plan on having “office hours” where we can chat as a group on google meet once of twice a week.

Thank you so much, and may the force be with you 😉

Friday Update 2/7

Welcome back to Ms. Jangula’s weekly blog!

Language Arts:

This week we have begun our research on the specific person that we believe inspires us. We are prepared to start a rough draft and then continue to edit and revise our speeches. This is NOT a biography from birth to death, this is supposed to represent how someone’s good actions stood out from their flaws. Make sure your student has a rough draft done for the speech by February 21st.

Social Studies:

Your student has gathered into a group of 2 other friends, they have been assigned to study an explorer from the age of exploration. They will then, use their own resources to make a journal from their explorer’s perspective. The assignment is due on February 14, make sure your kids are using their time wisely, they will have some days to work on it in class next week.

Homework for weekend

-Biography speech research

– Work on Explorer research

Thanks for reading! We will make sure to keep you updated on next weeks agenda.

Sincerely Ms. Jangula’s class

Friday Update 12/20

Happy Friday Jangula fans! Today’s the last school day of the decade, before it’s officially 2020!

This week in LA-  Actually, to make this stand out a bit more, I’m not gonna follow the script.

As we continue to learn in Ms. Jangula’s class (and maybe cause her to go insane a bit) we start the week with our favorite teacher announcing our winter break homework; Do 10 different acts of kindness and document them in a slideshow.

(Quite possibly the best break assignment ever)

Along with that, we took the first LA test of the year; quite a few B’s and C’s, sadly. We did, however, write a journal entry about waking up in one of your favorite books (I chose the Hunger Games. Unsurprisingly, I died ;-; )

In Social Studies, we’ve continued our grind towards completing a nice and neat travel brochure for our African countries that we chose (I personally chose Madagascar, it’s nothing like the movie) and are going to kick off our Africa Unit at the end of the break.

For our Current Events, we’ve focused on the topic of humanity (basically r/humansbeinggood stuff) which is due during the break.

*ruffles through papers*

Okay, so the script says to talk about what’s coming up next week, but next week is winter break, so I guess next week…

ENJOY YOURSELVES!

Be sure to check the website calendar for due dates!

Thanks for reading, fellow people of the Jangula Fandom!

Sincerely from Ms. Jangula’s class,

Friday Update 12/13

We’ve made it yet one week closer to winter break!

This week in Language arts we have been focusing on different elements of writing. We started with the different parts and speech and then moved into punctuation and capitalization. We did some online activities and groups games to practice and then finished the week with a quiz on all three topics.

This week in SS we moved from our study of the Medieval Middle East over to the continent of Africa. To begin our unit we all chose an African country to research and create an informational brochure, that we have been working on all week. Ending the week with current event presentations!

Homework for the weekend: Work on December Current events. Work on Klimt Portrait.

I believe that is all for this week! Have a good weekend!

Friday Update 12/6

Happy Friday! One day closer to winter break!

In language arts this week we covered many things. On Monday we spent time working on self portraits, on Tuesday we had a discussion about bullying on and offline, Wednesday we continued to work on our self portraits, Thursday we started an interview panel activity, and on Friday we added the finishing touches on the activity we started on Thursday.

In social studies we read a lot about the crusades. On Monday we finished a chapter in our work book we started the week before break, Tuesday we spent time on the next chapter in our workbook, chapter 11 and we went over chapter 10, Wednesday we took more focused notes on chapter 11, On Thursday we worked more on our interview panel, and on Friday we took part in acting out our interview panel.

For homework this week we had a couple things if you didn’t finish it in class.

Two more weeks to go!

Friday Update 11/22

Happy Friday all,

Hope you had a great week!

Here in Ms. Jangula’s class we’ve been busy, per usual.

In LA:
In Language Arts this week we held our last lit circle meeting and finished up our Middle East based young adult novels. It seemed like everyone enjoyed them…at least partially 😉 We’ve also started our Bernstein unit for the year…with the focus on systems. For this unit we will focus on how systems affect most things we do including in school, in the larger society, in nature, and so on; it should be pretty fun.

In SS:
We have been studying the origins and practices of the Islamic religion. We learned about the story of the prophet Muhammad, and the five pillars of Islam, outlining the daily life practices of Muslims. Our study goes hand in hand with the novels we are reading.

Weekend homework: November current events are due by the time students come back from break. Also if they have any other make up work to do, this would be a good time to do it!

I am VERY much looking forward to seeing all of you at parent-teacher conferences. Thank you, have a great holiday weekend.

Friday…well Thursday Update 10/10

Happy Thursday 7th graders! Remember to enjoy your 3 day weekend!

This week in LA we continued reading Red Scarf Girl, and have been working hard on vocabulary. Red Scarf Girl is a must read for those who don’t know that. It is an autobiography of a girl during China’s cultural revolution. Remember, this week we need to do 2 columns for the summaries in our booklets. We also changed passwords this week, so don’t forget your new password!

In SS the class read about Heian-Kyo, the ancient capital of Japan, and how people lived in Heian-Kyo and, Japan, generally. We also started writing a letter to somebody as if we lived in Heian-Kyo. What we did, how we look, where we live, and who we are under the rule of. This assignment is due Wednesday, so make sure you keep working. We also learned about how Japan borrowed a lot of ideas from India, Korea, and China.

Our homework for this week is read pages 206-229 in Red Scarf Girl, and write a summary on those pages, then pages 230-243, and the summary for those pages. We also have 2 Current Event sheets, both on the Middle East, and only that.

Next week:

Thank you all for reading! Also, Ms. Jangula will become Mrs. Jangula this Saturday!!!!! Congratulations Mrs. Jangula!
Sincerely, Mrs. Jangula’s class!

Friday Update 9/20

Happy Friday all!

We have made it through our first month of 7th grade~ Hopefully pretty painlessly at that!

This week in LA arts we have started our first novel of the year “Red Scarf Girl” a story written from a young girls perspective during China’s Cultural Revolution. We also began work in the accompanying booklet that we will be completing alongside the novel for the next four weeks…a heavily weighted assignment. With the novel we will have a weekly set of vocabulary words. The word list and information about the book can be found on the Language Arts page of the blog. We have also been starting our state MAPS testing to identify where students are in their writing and reading at the start of the year…and to track growth throughout. We ended the week with our first Red Scarf Girl/Vocab Quiz.

In SS we have been learning how to properly use an atlas buy doing an atlas scavenger hunt and comprehension questions. Later in the week we started our first official medieval unit with China and the struggles of running such a gigantic country hundreds of years ago. And from now to the end of the year, every Friday we will be spent listening to current event presentations.

For homework this weekend: students need to read pages 37-51 and write a summary of the reading.

Coming up next week:
Mon: Back to school night
Tues: Picture Day
Fri: Cookie Dough forms need to be returned.

I believe that is it for this week, have a great weekend!
